In 2007 and 2008, Commit to Partnership Munich carried out short-term projects (4 - 6 weeks) in Sierra Leone and Uganda. In Sierra Leone the goal was to encourage peace and in Uganda to educate young people about HIV/Aids. The projects were led by student volunteer teams in collaboration with local partner organizations.
Peace work in Sierra Leone
In Sierra Leone, Commit cooperates with the organization of human rights 'Forum of Conscience' (FOC).
The groups were also involved with the Truth and Reconcilation Committee, a government entity which provided a report with recommendations for lasting peace.
Today, FOC continues to make the report accessible to the general public. In addition the FOC has published a consumable version for secondary schools.
The purpose of the project was to introduce this report at schools in Sierra Leone to sharpen the consciousness for the causes and the course of the war. The German team developed workshops with students from Sierra Leone, to be carried out in secondary schools. Besides the content of the report, methods for discussion of the conflict were facilitated through role plays and discussion groups
HIV/Aids clarification in Uganda and Kenya
In collaboration with the partner organization 'Straight Talk', Commit participated in 'Straight Talk Clubs' in Ugandan secondary schools. 'Straight Talk Clubs' enable the pupils to discuss the subjects of HIV/AIDS as well as sexuality, love and partnership in a safe school environment.
In open discussion groups, perspectives to problems and solutions in connection with sexuality and HIV were exchanged freely. The purpose of the project is to sensitize pupils and to show them that in the fight against HIV everyone must act responsibly.
